Turnaround and Newday

Turnaround and Newday are programmes we run in Wales especially for women offenders or those at risk of offending.

We work with girls and women in the community and in custody to help them get the full range support services they need. It is vital and life-changing work.

There are no women's prisons in Wales. The majority of women offenders serve their sentences in HMP Eastwood Park in Gloucestershire. Our Turnaround project offers them crucial resettlement support as well as crisis management support .

It's a complete and holistic service, and women respond to it extremely positively. We consider each woman’s complete wellbeing: her physical and mental health, her housing and family background, if she has history of suffering violence and abuse at home, and drug and alcohol misuse. We help each woman understand why she is offending and help her to break the cycle. Support like this is the most cost-effective way of tackling women’s offending.

In all cases, we offer education, training, help with housing, finances and family matters. We refer women to other specialist support agencies when appropriate and mainitaincontact with her throughout. At our women-only centres women feel safe talk about any anxieties they have and we compliment this with counselling and life skills.

Our Newday project focuses especially on helping women get the skills and training they need to get back into work.

In England we run similar programmes for women offenders and those at risk of offending.
