what we do
Platform 51 West Kent
Platform 51 West Kent welcomes all girls and women to its centre in Tonbridge.
We run programmes for women who may have dropped out of school or have low aspirations; have been bullied or abused; are isolated or unemployed; are young mums and mums-to-be; or may be using alcohol and drugs. We work with them to build their self-esteem and encourage them to have a go at new things, gain qualifications, to take part in events and campaigns, to volunteer, speak up, make decisions and share their opinions.
For girls who have dropped out of school, or find it hard to get into college or work, we run a variety of education programmes. In relaxed group sessions we teach literacy, numeracy, foundation learning, computer training, life skills such as managing on a budget, healthy living and staying safe. We provide sexual health services and inter-generational programmes. Our courses for young mums and pregnant teenagers teach parenting skills and offer support, information and the chance to get their work accredited.
We offer peer support and friendship and build women’s confidence using creative media such as film-making, art and dance.
Together with our partners we provide a range of services to meet the needs of girls and women to enable them to be active citizens and to contribute towards their local community. Our participatory approach means that our services are shaped by those who actually use them.
Of the 445 girls and women we have worked with regularly in the past 12 months, 67 achieved an accreditation or qualification and 31 moved into education, employment or training. 168 girls and women have been actively involved in our participation programmes.
