Platform 51 Warstones
Platform 51 is the only female–only centre in south west Wolverhampton.
The centre works with 700 girls and women. We also recently merged our former Bilston centre with our Platform 51 Warstones centre following an organisational restructure. Our services are designed to change their lives by getting involved, raising their aspirations and helping them make informed choices.
Many girls find the transition between primary and secondary school, college, training or the outside world extremely difficult; and without support they are at risk of dropping out. We offer girls and their parents support and encourage them to stay in education. Older women who want to learn new skills or find employment also value the educational advice we can offer.
We encourage girls to take part in workshops, discussions and be creative in activities such as arts and craft and dance. They can have their say, make new friends and try new things. Our football programme, which is open to both girls and boys, is very popular and encourages girls to get out there and get fit and have fun.
Our accredited education programmes are informal and relaxed. Our alternative curriculum is non-judgemental and helps girls and women to understand themselves and the problems they may face. For mums and mums-to-be we run accredited parenting skills courses and offer support when they need it.
Our recently refurbished crèche means women can attend any of our activities knowing their children are being looked after.
At our drop-in sessions women can talk in confidence with a project worker. At group sessions women learn about parenting, healthy eating, diet and exercise, staying safe and sexual health, alcohol and drugs.
Most of the girls and women we meet have lost confidence. Trying new things, joining in and finding new friends all build confidence. We encourage girls and women to take part in community projects, dance workshops, arts and crafts, residentials or outdoor activities with their peers.
Creche
The creche at our Warstones centre is open from 9.30am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays for women accessing specific services. Creche places must be booked in advance.
