our work with girls and women

Platform 51 Nottingham

teenage girlsNottingham city is the thirteenth most deprived of 354 districts in England.

Girls and women in the city face problems such as: low income, unemployment, discrimination, low educational attainment and substance abuse. For many women these problems are compounded by low self-esteem and low aspirations.

Platform 51 Nottingham helps girls and women have their say and contribute to their society. Most of our support services are group work programmes in the community. We work in schools, children’s centres and with other voluntary organisations to reach the girls, women and sometimes men where appropriate who most need us.

We often work with girls who are finding the step up to secondary school difficult, young mums and dads and women involved in prostitution.

Our programmes, some of which are accredited are informal and relaxed to help girls and women to understand themselves and learn essential life skills. To date we have helped over 200 girls and women to achieve an accreditation.

We work hard to build trusting relationships with the most vulnerable women by being flexible, fun and genuinely caring. Our workers tailor activities to meet individual needs. Our participatory approach to all that we do enables women to influence and shape the services they want: planning, developing and managing them.

Women often tell us that they really value what we offer: the chance to learn and talk about things that really matter in a female-only space. This is often the first time they have felt listened to.

Creche

Unfortunately we do not have our own creche at Nottingham, but the women's centre in whcih we are based has one which any women can access. It's open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5.15pm and places must be booked in advance.
