what we do

Platform 51 Cwmafan

happy young womanPlatform 51 Cwmafan is in a semi-rural location on the outskirts of Neath Port Talbot from where we run outreach services across the county. We are the only service in the area that does this.

Our services are shaped, influenced and planned according to the needs of the girls and women in the area. We focus on participation and learning so consequently, many girls go on to become volunteers and get involved in campaigns in their community.

At our group sessions, women learn how to overcome bullying and domestic violence, about healthy eating, diet and exercise, sexual health, alcohol and drugs. At one-to-one sessions with project workers are also offered where women can talk about whatever is troubling them in complete confidence.

Many girls find the transition between primary and secondary school, college, training or the outside world extremely difficult; and without support they are at risk of dropping out. We offer advice and support on education, skills, training and employment. As well as running accredited educational programmes. We support girls and women to make up their own minds about what to do next.

Most of the girls and women we meet have lost confidence. Trying new things, joining in and finding new friends all build confidence. We encourage girls and women to take part in community projects, dance workshops, arts and crafts, residentials or outdoor activities with their peers.
