what we do
Platform 51 Cornwall
Cornwall is one of Britain's most popular holiday destinations but the loss of traditional industry in the county means it is now one of the poorest.
Platform 51 Cornwall is based in Truro, Cornwall’s county town. As Cornwall is a large, rural county we work in a variety of ways to meet the needs of girls and women. We have an outreach service that runs in children’s centres, youth clubs, community centres and schools. This flexible approach makes us extremely responsive, we meet some of the girls and women who are the hardest to reach and who need us most.
We complement this by running centre-based services such as:
• Drop-in’ sessions where girls and women can talk about their problems one-to-one and in confidence with a project worker.
• Courses specifically for young mums and pregnant teenagers. We teach parenting skills and offer support, information and the chance to get their work accredited.
• Group sessions, which can be arranged whenever they’re needed. Girls and women learn about healthy eating, diet and exercise, safe sex and sexual health, alcohol and drugs, and get support to stop smoking.
• Information about education, skills, training and jobs.
• Support and guidance for women who have offended or are at risk of offending
Our work is for our two age groups, services for girls and younger women and services for adult women.
Our specialist project workers plan our services according to what girls and women tell us they need. We think that the girls and women we work with are the experts, and have the assets to make positive life changes and decisions.
The girls and women who come to our sessions may be isolated, unemployed, questioning their sexuality, or taking serious risks with their health or personal safety. They work together to overcome their differences and prejudices. We offer a huge range of activities to build confidence; surfing, cycling, arts and crafts, theatre trips, cooking, eating, playing games and joining other groups to meet new people.
We encourage everyone to take part, speak up, make decisions, share their opinions and get involved with campaigning and volunteering both locally and nationally.
Creche
Unfortunately we do not have our own creche at our centre in Cornwall.
