what we do

Platform 51 Bristol

Two young women laughingPlatform 51 Bristol provides services both at its centre and throughout the community. This outreach approach makes us extremely flexible; we meet girls and women who are the hardest to reach and who most need us. We encourage all the girls and women we meet to take part, speak up, make decisions and share their opinions.

We welcome girls and women from all backgrounds including those who may have dropped out of school; women from black and ethnic minority backgrounds, refugees or asylum seekers; women who have been involved in the criminal justice system; those with learning disabilities; young mums and mums-to-be and those with mental health problems.

We offer specialist programmes to meet individual and local needs. These include counselling services, support for mothers experiencing depression, and help for women coming out of prison. We also work with boys and men where we think it will benefit women.

At our friendly drop-in sessions girls and women can talk about anything they like, learning from each other guided by a project worker. At group sessions women learn about parenting, healthy eating, diet and exercise, safe sex and sexual health, alcohol and drugs.
We run informal education programmes. In a relaxed atmosphere we help girls and women learn literacy, numeracy, money management, citizenship, how to stay healthy and other useful life skills.

Platform 51 Bristol encourages girls and women to have their say locally and nationally. They take part in conferences and training events and influence policy by responding to government consultations, meeting MPs (including the Prime Minister) and speaking at political party conferences.

Creche

The creche at our Bristol centre is open from 10am to 3pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays. It runs on other days if we have specific groups and events.
