what we do
meet the women we work with
Louise

I started coming to Platform 51 when I became pregnant. I took part in the Young mums to be course. I found it incredibly useful. Through coursework projects we learned how a baby grows and develops. It was the equivalent of an NVQ.
I got so much out of it that I went on to the Parents with prospects course. It showed that the learning doesn’t stop once you have the baby. The course prepared me for what’s to come - the teething and the baby’s needs. Physically and mentally your life really changes after the baby comes and you need support.
Now I’m doing a Level 3 course in child care learning and development. I’d like to go on to be a health visitor or work with children and young people, possibly teaching sexual health.
I feel that Platform 51 has supported me so much through all the challenges I have faced. It’s not easy for young parents. Often young women don’t have a clue what to do when they fall pregnant and it’s not their fault, it’s just that they haven’t had the opportunity to learn before.
I love being a mum and because I had all that information, I was in a better place when it came to my child. The support was really helpful and the workers were excellent.
Find out how your support can help young women like Louise here.

“A lot of people think young girls get pregnant because they can't be bothered to use protection or are ignorant about it. But teenagers are just like anyone else. Mistakes happen. Life would be much easier for young mums if there was more understanding and respect.”
