what we do
meet the women we work with
Jude

Jude, aged 20, is unemployed: “There’s no work around here, it’s hopeless. I wanted to join the army. I thought it would be a way to escape from here and get work, but for medical reasons I couldn’t get in. I’ve applied for a plumbing course now. I come to Platform 51 because I don’t want my brain to turn to mush. At Platform 51 I can stay active and there’s always a new challenge. I’m training to be a volunteer peer mentor so I can help other people.
“The recession is really hard on young people. I met my MP at his advice surgery. I told him how difficult it is for young jobseekers to find the money for transport to find work and that I thought they should get bus passes. I know a bit about politics because mum makes me watch the news, but Mr McFadden explained to us all about the general election, which was really interesting.
“I know that politics is important, but the MPs’ expenses thing showed they were abusing the power they’ve been given by people who trusted them. They’ve taken the mick.
“Politics has everything to do with everybody; it’s about schools, the NHS, everything. The recession needs to get sorted so companies can thrive and we can get jobs. Global warming and healthy eating are important to young people. Even if people think politics has nothing do to with them it does. That’s why everyone should vote and have their say.

Rosie says: "All those years ago I was very timid. My home life had been dominated by sexual abuse and violence, it was normal to me."
