what we do
meet the women we work with
Hazvinei
I had a stable family life in my home country in Africa. I had a good job and a strong support network of friends and family before civil unrest forced me to leave.
Together with my two children I sought refuge in England. Adjusting to a different environment was traumatic for all of us. To us, England was a new and strange place where we knew no one. We felt very isolated and did not feel we belonged in this country. But, we were safe.
I didn’t have a work visa and was stuck in the house. I was suddenly very idle and scared of such a life. Our support worker introduced me to Platform 51 where I joined the lone parents support group and took part in courses where I learned new skills.
I was given the chance to volunteer at the centre. This was very rewarding and I felt like I belonged. I enjoyed making a positive contribution to a very much needed service. I made many friends, improved my English and learned about my adopted country’s culture.
When I got my work visa, Platform 51 supported me in my search for work. After a few years of volunteering while I worked locally, I got a job with Platform 51. I enjoy the work so much that I returned to full-time education and am now studying for a degree in social work.
I am very grateful for the support that Platform 51 has given me; it has helped me stand up and play my role in the community I live in. I am happy to be doing something to benefit others.

"I moved to England from the Gambia when I was 12 years old. The workers at Platform 51 have helped me apply to college, get the right solicitor, volunteer at the centre, make friends and go on trips and take part in activities. They have given me support and advice and helped me to build up my confidence, gain new skills and achieve my goals."
