what we do
Learning programmes

Platform 51 encourages girls and women to learn new skills and develop their talents. Only by trying things and finding out what they’re good at can they unlock their potential and transform their lives.
We offer a range of stimulating and engaging courses that lead to quality-assured, nationally recognised qualifications. Our courses are flexible so they fit easily into a learner’s life. Qualifications help women improve their confidence, secure a job, get promotion and improve their finances. A strong community can only be achieved when we invest in our children, our health and good citizenship and that’s why our courses focus on healthy living, and social and personal responsibility.
The courses we offer are predominantly entry level and level 1 courses. However once learners begin to gain confidence, they can step up onto higher level courses. We help our learners to work out which courses and qualifications are right for them, and help them develop their literacy and numeracy skills. We encourage learners to go on to further or higher education and offer them information, advice and guidance on the best ways of doing so.
Accreditation
Accreditation recognises the value of a course with ‘credits’, with which the learner can demonstrate what they’ve learned. These credits can be built up and added to with further education, and finally the learner can earn their nationally-recognised award, certificate or diploma.
Courses
We asked the women and girls we work with what they want to learn about. The subjects they chose are practical, transferable skills useful throughout a woman’s life. They are:
- Assertiveness and decision making
- Challenging prejudice and discrimination
- Citizenship
- Communication skills; discussions, listening, speaking, responding
- Confidence-building
- Healthy living; alcohol, drugs, healthy eating, sexual health and relationships
- Law and order
- Parenting
- Personal development
- Self-awareness
- Personal budgeting and money management
- Teamworking
