Programmes and activities

Platform 51's programmes and activities offer women and girls the chance to learn practical skills and develop themselves. By taking part in courses and groups, they can overcome some of the problems in their lives. Here are just a couple of examples of the many programmes we run.

Alcohol abuse prevention programme

There are many reasons why girls abuse alcohol: bullying and abuse, alcohol or drug use in the family, failure at school, peer pressure and stress. Our alcohol abuse prevention programme for girls aged 8 to13 is one of the few such programmes focused entirely on girls and aims to deal with the underlying reasons which lead girls to drink to excess.

Helping girls and women get education and skills

More girls than boys are not in education, employment or training (NEET).

For girls who have dropped out of school, or for women who missed out we teach practical subjects: English language, maths, parenting, money management, healthy living, sex education, active citizenship and life skills. Many of our courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Our Wise up programme is for the most socially excluded girls. It builds their confidence and  helps them become active citizens.

Looked after girls

Girls aged 11 to 18 who are looked after (in care) are vulnerable to low self-esteem and often take risks with their personal and sexual safety. We provide a support network, access to counselling, a chance to learn about money management and other life skills.

Read about Sarah and Becky to see what kinds of problems girls who have been in care face and what we're doing to help.

Please support our urgent appeal for funds to run our Powerpuff Girls project for girls in care in South Yorkshire.

Offenders

Our Chrysalis programme of activities, courses and groups for women offenders and those risk of offending dramatically changes lives.

Chrysalis women’s groups operate throughout England and in prisons and what do is working. 97% of women taking part have not re-offended. Chrysalis worker Emma, says: “These women are stuck in a way of life which they have no idea how to get out of. We stop women re-offending and wasting all their talent.”
