Change of name, passion the same
YWCA becomes Platform 51

During the 155 years since we were founded, we've had to evolve to reflect changes in society and the needs and expectations of women. This is true not only of the work we do, but also of our name. Our original name no longer stood for who we are or what we do and people often confused us with another charity. So we have changed our operating name from YWCA England & Wales to Platform 51.
Why 'Platform 51'?
Our new name more accurately represents who we are and what we do: 51% of people are female, and girls and women use us as a platform to have their say and as a place from where they can move into the next stage of their lives.
Make no mistake, what remains the same is our passion to help girls and women as they take control of their lives.
Have your say

- Love the name change - reflects what you do - challenging and overcoming the obstacles that prevent so many young women from realising their considerable potential.
Rachel Key - Stratford upon Avon 29 Nov 2010 - 18:46 - Well done. The new name sounds good - I like it.
Rebekah - Mitcham 02 Dec 2010 - 10:18 - Brilliant move - puts the emphasis right on the core focus of the organisation (women in society in need of support) and in our 21st multi cultural society hits the button for me at least!
Joe Conneely - London 05 Dec 2010 - 21:29 - I agree with the reasons behind changing the name and bringing it to the 21st century. Good name choice too! Good luck with the next 150 years.
Jo - Yorkshire 06 Dec 2010 - 17:49 - As a former member of the YWCA in Doncaster now long retired I would like to congratulate you on your name change. Yes I wondered who you were. Its a great name and not easily forgotten.
Every good wish for your future in the 21 century.
Margaret Johnson - 18 Dec 2010 - 11:01 - It is a concern to me that the 'Christian' component of the title was not maintained. I wonder if this observation points to the real issue - that this is a move towards secularising the organisation? Too many institutions that played an important role in the past in projecting sound values and principles are being changed, rather degraded to reflect secular views some of which do not engender righteous living. Passion I think is shown when an organisation stands for the values and morals that it represents even in changing times.
G Young - England 08 Jan 2011 - 22:02 - The removal of yet another title bearing the word 'Christian' as this so called Christian country slip furthur down the slippery slope into the abyss of the unknown!
Beezageoff - Norfolk 09 Jan 2011 - 09:51 - This is a ridiculous idea! I presume this will allow more liberal standards to be there so that more money can be claimed for such things as defending gay rights, abortion seminars etc.
Gill Phillips - Bristol 09 Jan 2011 - 16:40 - Why must the title of a charity contain the word 'Christian' in order for it to "engender righteous living"?
Good name change.
Sam - Unknown 11 Jan 2011 - 08:09 - This is an organization that is inclusive of all people. The title reflects it much better now. I love the name change and I hope other YW's follow the example.
Keep up the great work!!!! <3 Cat, USA
Cat - Pennsylvania, USA 11 Jan 2011 - 20:50 - Congratulations on the name change. I worked for YWCA a few years ago.
Having met a lot of the young women in centres across the country, who need support to make the most of their often very difficult lives, I know you are doing a very good job! Good luck to you.
Lin Beekar - Oxfordshire 13 Jan 2011 - 11:55 - I think YWCA/Platform 51 is a marvellous organisation. I have long admired the work you do. I think it is a great shame that you feel the need to disavow your roots in Christians inspired by their love of God and people to make the world a better place. Where does this leave you with the World YWCA, that great alliance of women across the world?
